Whats the book that i'm thinking about?

i read this book in school about a black man and this little boy who became blind from a bomb blast i think and then the two find a piece of land and build a little house type thing and then a tornado comes and killes the black man but the little boy has to fend for himself and then he gets found!!!!! if anyone knows what book i'm talking about can you let me know if there is a movie for it?
