Can a 21 year old purchase alcohol at a store with a sibling in ct?

my sister and i went to shaws to get beer for her and my mom and i drove cuz she had no gas from driving home from college. When we got there, they wouldn't let my 21 year old sister buy alcohol because i was with her and im not 21. Is that a law?
